EMU: MusiQuE “Music Schools and Pre-College Standards”Review Process and Informative Meeting

EMU is a founding member of MusiQuE, which was established 10 years ago together with AEC and Pearle (EAS joined later). Focused on quality enhancement MusiQuE is the only subject specific quality concept developed by the music sector.

MusiQuE has developed a set of standards which have been adopted by many higher music education institutions worldwide. Last year, the MusiQuE board set up working groups with experts from the field and started to revise all the standards. In this process, the pre-college music education standards, which are mainly used by higher music education institutions offering pre-college programs, were also revised. The working group, consisting of Jacques Moreau, chair of the MusiQuE board, Michaela Hahn, MusiQuE board member, Helena Maffli and Philippe Dalarun, former EMU presidents and Crina Mosneagu, staff member, decided to extend this standard to encompass all aspects of music school work. With this draft of MusiQuE’s new “Music Schools and Pre-College Standards”, for the first time there is a common basis for quality enhancement in music schools on a European level, coming from the sector with the expertise of MusiQuE.

Access  these new standards hereMoreover, we would like to invite all members to an informative meeting which will take place on Thursday 28th November 9.00 CET via Zoom. Jacques Moreau and Michaela Hahn will give you some background information on the process and discuss key points of the new standards and their relevance for music schools.

The review process is planned until end of January 2025, and we kindly ask all our members to read the new standards, discuss them within your national boards and within the forthcoming EMU regional group meetings and provide us with your feedback until 31 January 2025 – either within the online discussion or in writing. We look forward to your feedback, comments and suggestions, to ensure that these standards are applicable for our music schools.

Please note, that these standards are a toolkit aimed to guide music schools and pre-college music education providers in evaluating their activities and enhancing quality. They are also meant to assist them in defining and describing their own concept and vision and how both are implemented. Although MusiQuE also offers structured review processes and critical friends visits, the standards can be used in various contexts and should be perceived and understood as ‘guidelines’ in all these contexts. We are looking forward to receiving your feedback and would be delighted to welcome you to this informative meeting on 28 November.
